As a freshman, you meet a lot of new people in the first few weeks/months of school. Some you may have met during orientation, some live in the same dorm, and some you may meet in class. You might not necessarily like all of the people you meet, but some of them will become your close friends.
As a returning sophomore, however, I've found that the most difficult thing to get used to is having the friends you made in your first year, the ones you got really close to, transfer to different schools. This year I returned to Norwich having quite a few of the friends I made last year not return. It's a weird feeling, almost like you're a freshman again, going back to not knowing anyone. I think, as freshman you're kind of set up, in a way, to make friends. A lot of the courses you take are the same courses all the other freshman are taking and they're people you recognize, whether it be from orientation, or they live on the same floor as you. But when you start taking higher level courses, there is such a mixture of people and class levels, it's almost like starting over.
I'm taking an English class this semester that has been, so far, mostly class discussions on the texts we've read. Yesterday, however, that changed. We were told to get into groups of three and discuss certain aspects of the reading. The people that knew each other quickly formed their groups or snagged the people sitting near them. Not really knowing anyone in the class, I did what I think most people in the situation would do. I panicked. Then looked around for others doing the same. Luckily, I wasn't the only one that didn't immediately have a group, but I felt the same way I did last year, not really knowing what to do. I think it's probably the same every year or maye even every semester, with new classes and new people, but it's hard once you get used to certain people or professors and then, they're no longer there.
But this weekend will definitely be a good one. One of the really good friends my boyfriend and i made last year, who transferred, is coming up to visit! We've both been so excited all week, it's actually a little ridiculous, but we can't wait! On the agenda: HOCKEY! I'm so excited to go to this game. I went to the game last week and it was probably one one the best games I've been to. I definitely missed NU Hockey, can't wait to go again tomorrow! :)
