Freshmen year is the most important year in the life of a cadet. It is the year when recruits become cadets, but most importantly it is also the year when cadets learn to be followers before becoming leaders.
Upon their return to Norwich sophomores experience a completely different Norwich, one they completely ignored during their "rook" year. The first thing a sophomore cadet realizes is that everything that they everything they did as a freshmen had a reason behind it, and that life un an upperclassmen unit is not the same as in a rook platoon. As a sophomore, a cadet will undergo a new phase of training known as Sophomore Training. This training is composed of different aspects such as military arnis, honor training, and unit specific training. Sophomores will also participate in Fall and Spring field training exercises (FTXs) and will have the opportunity to take part in the Green Mountain Experience, which is an exclusive skiing trip for that class year.
Within the Regiment there will also be different leadership opportunities. Sophomores can have jobs within their units either as company runners,Armorers, Supply NCOs, or other unit specific tasks. Special Units such as Drill Team, Artillery, and the Cavalry Troop depend a lot on their Corporals for training, either with rifles, horses, or cannons.
Sophomore cadets will also enjoy more free time than freshmen or other cadets, which allows them to participate in varsity sports, intramural sports, clubs (Rangers, MCW, Spec Ops, etc), special units (CAV, Drill Team, Artillery, Band), or to dedicate their free time to their personal improvement (either academically or physically).
Overall, sophomore year is a transition year. Followers become assistants, which will eventually turn into the backbone of the Corps upon entering their junior year at Norwich.
