"This is the Miltary College of Vermont, so welcome back!"
k It's a new school year, and it sure is going to be different from last year as a freshmen. It's strange to see my buddies wearing corporal ranks, and it's weird to think that we're not freshmen anymore. Where do we go from here?
Hello new readers! I was a blogger last year which focused on my experience in the Corps of Cadets as a freshmen. This year, as a sophomore in the Corps of Cadets, life here has changed but not too much. There are new leaders in the Corps, and with it comes a different batch of challenges and experiences.
On Sunday, the remaining upperclassmen arrived. The week before, the rooks arrived. The week before that, the cadet leaders arrived. And, on the first week of August, the Command and Staff group of the Corps arrived. So much preparation and planning is done in order for the freshmen to arrive here. The Corps is built to train the freshmen and therefore centers around their training.
This year, I am a runner, meaning that I disseminate any information or do tasks that the upper chain of command needs done. Perhaps there is a misconception that life as an upperclassman is easier-- because it really only does get harder. As a runner, I get a first-hand view to how the Corps functions, from the highest chain of command down to the lowest level. Even from the highest level of command, every cadet leader in the Corps is working hard. As for sophomores, we are mainly observers and don't really do any direct training with freshmen as far as the Corps goes. Newly instituted this year, sophomores now take a leadership course which will be put into practice during second semester with the freshmen.
The freshmen have been here for a week, and it brings back a flood of memories. It's weird sitting at lunch and conversing with the cadre who were our disciplinarians. Now, I can see that companies are families. You never have to worry about where to sit in the cafeteria-- there's always a seat for you, or they pull up a chair or even a table. Sometimes I miss being a freshmen, but at any other time, I am excited to see what this new year has and press forward.
