Here we are, about to dive into the truest depth of the winter here at Norwich. Truly, March is the longest month. It's the longest month for Norwich students. It's the longest month for faculty. It's just the dullest, most boring, truly agonizing month that has been delivered to the Dog River valley.
Okay, maybe I'm being a little dramatic, but March really is a dry and gray month. For many of my cadets in my platoon, they will feel the same effects of their first long winter here at school.
But then, as it always does, April will rip open from the heavens and deliver us sunshine, and the green will return to the campus once again. By the time all of us leave campus, we may very well still have snow on the campus, but by the time I return for my senior year, the campus will be vibrant once again, and my freshman will be able to see the campus, truly, for the first time. When you're a rook, you don't get to see the campus when it's green. You spend most of your time at attention or parade rest, squaring around in the gutter, and mainly, rooks are subject to their cadre who instill discipline within them. For many rooks, it's a huge shock. They are dropped off by their parents and left alone in the hands of juniors and seniors in order to give them a complete turn around, and in the end, they will make a transformation, depending on how much they believe in the rook system and the school itself.
Days tick by. Soon I'll have my ring, my kids will have full heads of hair again, and the wheel of life will come full circle.
Hey guys! So Monday of this week was my birthday. Having a birthday at school is soo wonderful. If one person knows its your birthday, that means everyone knows it is your birthday. I had a lot of people wish me a happy birthday, which is super awesome because it feels good to have other people wish me a happy birthday!
This week I am doing the snapchat for the Admissions office. It is really fun. I am posting my regular routines and taking pictures with my roommate. I made sure we wore our matching shirts so we could take a good picture while we did our nightly cleanse, which is just us brushing our teeth and doing any last minute things before we go to bed.
Today is the Etiquette Dinner, so I will be dressing up with my rook brother and going to eat a nice meal. This is a meal to teach you how to eat and converse at a fancier setting. When I was little I took etiquette classes which was honestly very good for me to know now as a young adult.
This Weekend I am going out with my friend and my roommate to KOTO which is a japanese grill. I am super excited about it because I love Japanese food. We are going to celebrate my birthday. Maybe while we are out we can grab some starbucks, which I feel like I haven't had in forever.
Next Wednesday I am leaving for spring break and gonna go home and spend sometime with my family. Maybe work a little bit to make some extra cash. I am just ready to not be at Norwich.
Well until next time guys! Feel free to leave any comments below asking any questions you have! Also please check out the snapchat this week!
Spring is right around the corner, and then it's SUMMER! I have a lot of fun trips/activities planned. My family and I go to an amusement park every summer. My friend and I are going to be traveling to Maine for a road trip. We are going to stay for about a week in a hotel and visit different beaches. I will have another little niece or nephew this summer so that is beyond exciting! Other than that, I am not too sure what my summer is going to look like. I will be working full-time this summer as a Licensed Nurses Assistant but I will have time off to enjoy my summer and spend time with some friends! I am excited to make more plans and maybe travel! Oh also this summer I will be taking an online nutrition class to lighten up my load for next year!
I figured I would share some dorm essentials with you if you plan on moving to college for the first time! A microwave comes in handy when you don't want to walk to the dinning hall and if you're like me and make midnight snacks. A mini fridge is a really good thing to invest in. Even though they are a bit pricey, you will appreciate it when you want cold water or fruit to stay somewhat healthy. I didn't have a fridge for awhile in my first semester because I figured I would just walk to the dining hall every meal and that doesn't happen. Sometimes I get so busy studying that I don't have time to go to the dining hall so I have simple food that I can make in my dorm. I bought a mini fridge with a freezer and I couldn't be any happier with my purchase. I keep frozen strawberry bars in my freezer so if I am up late studying and just want a healthy snack then I usually reach for those. However, during midterms and finals you would think my dorm is a movie theater. I snack on popcorn like crazy (yes I know, it isn't a healthy choice). And most importantly...a coffee machine! I have a Keurig and this is so beneficial for those early classes and even late night studying.
I am sure you have heard that college classes are difficult, and it is true. However, you can pass with good grades and make the deans list if you make school your top priority. When I first came to Norwich, I thought classes would be a breeze but they aren't. I love a good challenge though and if your classes were too easy then you wouldn't be learning a lot. Hard classes will be helpful for you in the long run because you will graduate Norwich with the high level of skills and knowledge. For example, if you were a nursing student and your classes weren't challenging then that would be a problem. If your patient had a rare disease that you didn't know about because your classes were easy and didn't challenge you enough to learn then you wouldn't know how to treat the patient. The reason why classes are tough is to get you ready for the real world. With that being said, you can still manage to get good grades. You need to study, study, study! Yes, I know studying is boring and you'd much rather be hanging out with friends but if you want to succeed then you need to do your homework and study practice problems even if your professor doesn't grade them. Try to get your homework done the same day you receive it so you don't forget. There has been many times my friends didn't do the practice problems and then we had an exam and most of the questions on the exam came from the practice problems and they struggled with the exam. College is a lot of dedication. You pretty much need to dedicate most of your time to school. But you need to have a balance also and hangout with friends when you don't have much to do. Taking notes in class is important! This will help you study for your exams. You can do it if you put your mind to it! It is possible for everyone!
This month on campus has been really fun. My friends and I have been attending hockey games here and I'm not trying to brag...but our hockey team is phenomenal! When we returned from break, there was a skating rink built in front of the Wise Campus Center that has been available to anyone at anytime. A couple Fridays ago, there was fun activities that included skating, music, and even the restaurant Cornerstone came to serve meals. Even when it is cold out, Norwich finds ways to have fun! Today the weather isn't too cold or too hot which makes good hiking weather! After classes today my friends and I are going to go on a hike. There are so many beautiful trails around!
As an English major with a Concentration in Creative Writing and a student blogger, you could probably guess that I write A LOT! Well, you're not wrong, so I figure, why not share it with you all if I want to share my work with the world one day. This is the very first piece I wrote for my Creative Writing class with Professor Cox this semester. Our assignment was to write about a memory using the senses. It's gone through countless peer reviews, professor critiques, and my changes. It will soon be on display in the Montpelier for National Poetry Month.
Leather Like Him
By Sarah Kazmierczak
Countless times I recall
My father enfolding my hand within his
And steering me towards the table,
On which he would place four leather shoes.
I was always drawn to the most worn match –
Rough and ragged,
Imperfect and inerrant –
The cracks coinciding with the callouses of his clutch.
He would hand me a brush rather big for my small body,
The splintered handle snagging on my sensitive skin.
I was meant to scrub the leather with its bristles –
Something my simple mind didn’t know was senseless.
Every since I was little I have wanted to be a lawyer. My dream of being lawyer has no exact cause or reason, as to why I want to be a lawyer. But I do. Here recently at school I have been concerned with that going forward with my career, like how am I going to pay for school or how will I get into school. This has been one of my most recent concerns moving forward with my life.
I have come to the realization that I am going to be in a lot of debt and I am going to have to work super hard to achieve this goal. My plan so far is to take the LSAT, I bought this super nice book to help me study. Then get into law school. I think maybe if I reach out to the Alumni system of Norwich I could find maybe a part time job or TA position near or around the law school I get into.
I am still really worried about my future but it feels pretty good having a decent picture of what I need to do in the future. I am hoping to get accepted in Rutgers in New Jersey or somewhere in Washington, DC. There are some pretty good law schools in Washington and Rutgers would be nice place as well.
For any student seeking a future graduate program, it would be wise to start the process in your Junior year so you can get any tests or other requirements out of the way. Starting earlier is always better and gives you time to change your mind or back out if you decide continuing your education isn't for you.
One last thing I am worried about is not having the motivation to continue law school for the next few years. The reason for this is most students at Norwich now, will be commissioning and going on to do things immediately after college and I will be left behind still in school. I know this will pay off and that in the long run it will be more beneficial for me but for now I am just worrying about the future and where I am at in it.
Until next time folks! I am sorry pictures of Recognition will be posted soon!
