Today, May 27th, was a nice slow day in San Ramon. In the morning, Mario, Matt, Mercedes and I went to El Instituto, which is the local high school, to help with the English classes. We went to the first, second, and third year English classes. They were working on learning numbers up to 75. The teacher decided we would play bingo with the children. We all drew out our own bingo cards and cut out little pieces of paper for chips. The professor had us four take turns calling out the numbers and then, if we had enough time for another game, the professor picked one of the students to call out the numbers. The kids had a lot of fun. In the afternoon, Ben and I attended Maykeli´s Spanish class, she is in her fifth year of secondary school which is the equivilant of a senior in high school in the USA. It was interesting to watch the class dynamic. There were about 40 students for one teacher. We finished the day with a group meeting and dinner prepared by Dona Nelly. We had nacatamales, a traditional Nicaraguan dish. It is made with corn meal, potatoes, rice, tomatoes, onions, chicken, and a few other ingredients. It was really good. We were allowed to invite one member of our host family and most of us invited our mothers. It was a really fun night.
So, while you were all relaxing, I was "recovering" from my taxi ride adventure (3 hours turned into 5 when the taxi broke down twice along the way), got 4 hours of sleep before getting to the airport, got stuck in Newark an extra 2 hours (on top of the 3 hour expected layover), arrived back in Burlington after midnight, and my checked bag didn't show up..... the bag only caught up to me five days later. Good thing it only had dirty laundry & rum in it!!!
