This is it! The weekend where most college students dream about... the three day weekend!
Here in Northfield, VT, there are a variety of festivities held Downtown to commemorate the Labor Day holiday. This serves as a great way for Norwich University students and faculty to interact with the community members, and for the community members to come and see more about Norwich, and neighboring organizations.
While I'm staying in this weekend with homework up to my ears, last year, I had the opportunity to volunteer on this holiday. I was assisting as a representative for The Veterans Place. This not-for-profit organization assists with programs that work to support Veterans regardless of age, sex and time served. I had the opportunity to speak with dozens of interested community members. Many community members came up to me just to talk about anything (and everything!). I enjoy the opportunity to get out and talk to people that I otherwise might not have the opportunity to talk to, and hear their own stories.
Ultimately, the point is, volunteering and stepping outside your comfort zone can be SO beneficial- even more so than words can describe.
Next year, I will be hoping for a lighter load of weekend homework so I can make it out to volunteer! I hope you can all do the same. If not, enjoy the three-day weekend!
Until next time!
