As much as I would love to say that I’m always super attentive and engaged in every minute of every class, that sadly is not the case. The nature of this college, probably more than a normal college, is that everyone is running on low sleep. Waking up for Army PT at 0530, it's already an early start to my Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Then I have class at 0800, 0900, 1100, 1200, and 1300. During my 1000-1050 break, you can 100% find me napping. I simply can’t survive here without naps.
I prefer more interactive classes as they keep my attention and I feel like I retain more information this way. In comparison, lecture type classes are easy to get distracted in and when you refocus, you can find yourself wondering how much information you missed. It is especially difficult to stay awake when classrooms are hot, creating a sauna-like environment.
To stay awake and focused, I keep a water bottle with cold water that I’ll periodically sip on. Typically, students would opt for coffee, but I'm not a huge coffee person and water is just easier to get and refill with water fountains on every floor. Sometime I’ll grab a rubber band to fiddle around with in a way that’s quiet and doesn’t disturb any other students but it keeps a part of my body moving to keep me awake.
